Why Your GAMSAT Section 2 Score Will Not Move (And How to Fix It)

7 min read · Updated 9 June 2026

There is a specific kind of frustration in Section 2: you write essay after essay, you feel like you are working hard, and the score does not budge. It is one of the most common plateaus in GAMSAT prep.

The cause is rarely effort. It is feedback. You cannot see your own blind spots, so you repeat them, politely, for weeks.

Writing more essays is not the fix

Volume only helps if each rep teaches you something. If you write ten essays and never get a precise read on what was wrong, you have practised your weaknesses ten times.

The lever is not more essays. It is better feedback on the ones you write.

The three plateaus, and what each one means

  • Stuck in the low 50s: usually structure and clarity. The reader cannot follow your line of thought.
  • Stuck in the high 50s: usually depth. Your ideas are reasonable but stated, not developed or complicated.
  • Stuck around 60: usually the leap to genuine insight and control of language that separates competitive from strong.

Name the trap, not the topic

Improvement comes from diagnosing the recurring pattern. Do your arguments drift from the prompt? Do you assert claims without earning them? Do your examples arrive before the point they are meant to prove?

When you can name the specific habit that keeps costing you, you can drill it out. Vague advice like 'write better' changes nothing.

Get an objective read on every essay

The single highest-leverage change is to mark every essay against the four criteria and act on the lowest one. Even a rough, honest score beats writing into the void.

Our marker does this in seconds: a score out of 100 on the four criteria, the exact lines where your argument slips, line-by-line edits, and a model paragraph rebuilt from your own writing. Mark one free and see what has actually been holding the score down.

Then change one thing at a time

Once you can see the pattern, fix one criterion in your next essay and leave the rest alone. Re-mark, confirm it moved, then move to the next. That is how a stuck score starts climbing again.
