Consider the following comments on influence.
The most powerful influence is the kind we never notice shaping us.
No man is an island, entire of itself.
John Donne
We call it persuasion when we agree and manipulation when we do not.
A society shaped by its loudest voices slowly forgets it ever had quiet ones.
Influence borrowed from a crowd is rarely returned as judgement of one's own.
Write a piece in response to one or more of these comments. Your essay will be assessed on the quality of your argument and the way you express it.
A way into this prompt
A defensible thesis is that influence is the invisible architecture of social life, neither sinister nor benign in itself, but dangerous precisely because its deepest forms operate below our awareness. Open by conceding that no one is self made, that every belief we hold was first suggested by someone, and that this is the ordinary condition of being social. Then complicate it: the line between honest persuasion and manipulation is thinner than we admit, and often we draw it after the fact to flatter our own conclusions. A strong third move examines how modern tools, from advertising to algorithms, industrialise influence at a scale earlier societies never faced. Caution: resist the paranoid view that all influence is control, which would leave no room for teaching, argument or the legitimate changing of a mind.
